2023 review: A Year of Growth, Challenges, and Lessons

A Year of Hustle, Hope, and a Healthy Dose of Hunger Pangs
As we bid farewell to 2023, it’s time to take a moment to reflect on the highs and lows, the achievements, and the lessons learned. In the spirit of simplicity and easy understanding, I will break down the year into three key aspects: What went well for me, What didn’t go well, and Areas where I need improvement.

First and foremost, I’m grateful to Semicolon Africa for the opportunity to learn and be trained as a software engineer. I remain grateful for the community and give special thanks to my cohort.

Thank you to Aniedi, who gave me the opportunity for a one-month internship. It was a great opportunity and I’m grateful for it. I learned a lot from Awal and the team.

Thank you so much, Joel Olawale. God bless you enormously. You have been there for me right from the beginning of my quest to get into tech. I pray for higher heights, in Jesus name.

To the amazing people the tech community in Nigeria brought my way and who have contributed to my growth in one way or another. I appreciate it.

What Went Well?

1. Consistency was my secret ingredient. One of the standout achievements of the year was my commitment to showing up more often. This consistency translated into a remarkable increase in the number of articles I published—more than ever before. This dedication not only showcased my work ethic but also opened doors to exciting opportunities. You can read some of my article here

2. I stepped outside of my comfort zone. Volunteering for OscaFest and CityJS not only contributed to community initiatives but also allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals. These experiences fueled my confidence, pushing me to launch my own YouTube channel and start a private tutoring service. Being a part of open-source communities further expanded my network and knowledge.

4. Personal Development. This year was marked by a journey of self-discovery and confidence-building. From conquering the fear of public speaking through a personal website and a  YouTube channel to launching a private tutoring service, I embraced challenges head-on and gained newfound confidence.

5. Intellectual Growth. Engaging with great minds through audiobooks and reading became a consistent habit. This not only broadened my perspective but also fueled continuous learning.

What Didn’t Go Well?

1. Financial Setbacks: Despite the positive strides in hustling, there were setbacks in financial planning. Initiating savings and investments was a positive step, but inconsistent commitment due to challenges like “SAPA”(hunger) hindered my progress.

2. Job Losses: The year ended on a sour note with the loss of jobs in December. This unexpected turn poses a challenge but also provides an opportunity for resilience and bouncing back stronger.

3. Lapses in Commitment: While I excelled in professional and personal endeavors, there were lapses in commitment to church activities. Balancing personal and spiritual growth remains an area for improvement.

4. Technical Skill Gaps: I realized I have lapses in my technical skills and is a crucial step towards growth. I have identified specific areas that need improvement and I think th

5. Technical Skill Gaps: I realized I have lapses in my technical skills and is a crucial step towards growth. I have identified specific areas that need improvement and I think that’s the first step towards addressing these gaps.

What Can I Improve On?

1. Technical Skills Enhancement: There is need for improvement. I’m Focusing on upskilling in specific technical areas that will contribute to both personal and professional growth.

3. Continuous Learning: I’m prioritizing a consistent reading habit and increasing engagement with educational content, such as audiobooks and tapes, This will fuel my ongoing personal development.

4. Spiritual Commitment: Balancing personal and spiritual growth by committing more actively to church activities is a goal for the coming year.

Conclusion

2023 was a year of notable accomplishments and valuable lessons. As we step into the new year, let’s carry forward the achievements, learn from the challenges, and embrace the opportunities for growth and improvement. Here’s to a new chapter filled with resilience, learning, and success!
